When it comes to buying a new air conditioner unit, the installation process can be quite tedious if done without proper knowledge. And though you can opt to DIY the installation yourself, it’s highly advised to have a proper professional do this for you.

There are various kinds of air conditioner units with different functions: (1) Portable Air Conditioner, (2) Window Air Conditioner, (3) Split or Ductless Air Conditioner, and (4) Central Air Conditioner – and each has specific requirements for installation.  Here’s a brief guide on how the installation is done.

Find a wall strong enough to hold the aircon unit

The indoor unit should be placed on a wall that is strong enough to hold its weight. The wall should also be high enough for the indoor unit to be installed at least 7 to 8 feet above the ground for a good cooling system in the room.

Check the spacing of the indoor unit and the location of the outdoor unit

Once you have the wall for the indoor unit, check if there is enough space surrounding the unit, which should be around 15cm or 6inches for proper airflow. The outdoor unit is as important as the indoor unit as it contains the fan motor, condenser, and compressor that are essential parts of your air conditioner. It should then be placed on a flat surface that is at least a foot away from the house.

This is important because the outdoor unit emits a loud vibrating sound when the air conditioner is turned on and can be disturbing for you and your neighbors if it is incorrectly placed. Make sure that there is a protective pad underneath the outdoor unit and that it is placed away from direct sunlight, heavy traffic, and dust for it to properly circulate air.

Connect the indoor unit to the outdoor unit

The material to connect both units should be a large copper wire and must be properly insulated. Double-check the wire for any damages, like tampering or tearing. It should be secured and not have any holes in it for the compressor to work. The wire should also be properly supported and not be sagging for the oil to flow through easily.

Check the electrical wires and connections

Ensure that there is a socket or a cable within reach for the electrical connection of the unit. The air conditioner would not be able to run without it!

Test if the air conditioner is working

Once the air conditioner is fully installed, don’t forget to run the system to check if the installation process was successful.

Always refer to the instruction manual that came with the unit for more specific steps on how to properly install your new air conditioner unit.
